I think we all agree Mayer isn’t getting fast-tracked. Maybe a different story if he doesn’t get hurt last year, but that’s semantics. Nobody has mentioned Anthony though, coupled with a Rafaela move to SS. I think there’s a non-zero chance Anthony blows away Portland and is an option the second half of the season. All-star break at the absolute earliest? And dependent on where the Sox are at, of course. That feels more likely than Mayer, even if it’s still not very likely. I think there is also a non zero chance that Mayer could blow away Portland. Mayer comes in to this season with 286 more pro AB's than Anthony. He shoulder is healed and he plays a position of great need right now. Rather than fearing that he will be fast tracked, I am optimistically watching with hope than he breaks out big and is ready this season.

I would love to see Roman force the issue by continuing to be awesome but I don't think he has any bearing on this. We've got 3 (2.5?) lefty outfielders in Duran, Abreu and Masa, plus O'Neill and soon Refsnyder, OF depth chart is still completely stacked if Cedanne is playing SS (and it's actually a pretty imbalanced roster if you think of him as an OF). If Roman continues his exponential ascent it's probably bad news for Wilyer Abreu most of all.
I guess the biggest question to me is how much better Cedanne would be at SS defensively than Reyes, Hamilton, Gonzalez, even Grissom. (Yes yes I know the Braves moved him off SS, but they also had Orlando Arcia who I'd take in a heartbeat over Hamilton and Gonzalez for sure, and probably Reyes if it's every day SS not utility IF/clubhouse VIBES guy.) I don't have eyes on his defense but I think it's possible Grissom is worse than Arcia, not a long term SS, and still our best internal option at SS if they don't think Cedanne is.

Give Hamilton/Gonzalez a few weeks' trial period while evaluating external options. If a competent defensive SS comes across the waiver wire, take a flyer. Maybe a more significant upgrade will make sense if the team is in contention closer to the trade deadline.
Given that Ceddanne looks like a world-beater in the outfield, I'd prefer not to jerk him around too much, but I'll defer to those who know much more than I.

Move Raffy to short.
I'm not looking for a good solution, I'm looking for an entertaining one.

I go back and forth on this. We might could improve the lineup signing Tommy Pham for LF and moving Ceddanne to SS but is that better than a Dejoung type move? I have my doubts there will be an external option available this time of year but who knows. I think we make do until mid season and see where we are then.

make a deal for tim anderson from miami Raffy Needs a ground covering SS ! He has an 80% GB rate, is striking out 30% of the time, and never walks. Please don’t do this to me Craig

I don't care if the SS can hit I need to see a SS that can actually play SS. Romy didn't look bad last night. But that is the only time I have seen him play. Hamilton looks exactly like his scouting report. I don't want to see the same infield as last year that was frigging ugly and painful to watch. I would be shopping to see what I could get externally. I get not spending a ton for someone. But if the Sox are playing Hamilton versus righthanded pitchers I think you are basically punting on the season.

Just sign Tommy Pham. This is already ridiculous

I know its extremely SSS but Pablo's exploding k% has me worried, if story is on the 60 day we should have a 40 man spot for him? edit: Andrus is available, I'd take him as a defensive replacement over Kemp since neither of them are going to offer anything with the bat.

I hope they let Devers be the DH for a while.
Option Enmannuel. He's not a solution to anything. Plant Hamilton at 2B. Never SS.
Ryan Fitzgerald, lhb ... he was quality depth. Gone for $0.

He is 1-13 in AAA with 6 strikeouts and he’s played 10 innings at SS since the beginning of last season, I can assure you he’s not any more of a solution than Hamilton is Who would your every day 3B would be?

Seems at like they may just wait for Mayer and hope in 45ish games he tears up AA and just goes straight to mlb like many top prospects no need to waste time in AAA

How's Mayer doing with the breaking balls these days? There were some pretty concerning stats in that department last season which make me feel like he's more likely to need a little more time in the minors to work on that issue; whereas I could see either Anthony or Teel as more likely to rocket up to Boston.

One of the recent pods (maybe the spring training edition) suggested that he still has a long way to go on breaking balls. I agree that it's hard to imagine them rushing him up this year when he has such a significant hole in his game.

At what point do they admit that the player the Sox need isn't in the organization?
just make a damn trade. It's getting ugly with Romy now hurt and Devers at 5
get Dejong, get Kemp, try for Kim or Drury, call Andrus or Seguara just make some moves to give these guys some help. I know the front office doesn't think this team is worth adding to, but without making a trade this team is unwatchable. Unwatchable turns to poor profits.

Lets give the Mets a bag of balls for Iglesias, worked out for us in '21 and he's in AAA for them
