4/12-4/14 Red Sox vs. Angels Series Thread

How do we feel about optioning Campbell to get an extra arm up? Have to figure he’s down for definitely game 1 and likely game 2. Probably need Winck (3 days rest) or Anderson (4) for game 2; neither is likely to top four innings. Pen is kind of spent as it is, so you might want to use Anderson tonight. Sounds like yes he is being optioned. Maybe call up Kelly or Jacques for tonight and then send him down for Criswell tomorrow? Chris Cotillo is only reporting that both Dalbec and Criswell are present, but no roster moves to this point. It doesn’t sound like anyone else is up. I like where your head is at, though. I don’t like how often we play short handed, whether that’s carrying day-to-day types who aren’t in the Devers/Kenley/whatever tier of veteran/importance, or rotation disruptions where we just “save” a reliever for a few days. Subjective opinion, but it feels like they’ve been averse to cycling guys with 1-2 day call ups over the past couple seasons. We played the last two games of the Orioles series effectively down two relievers and had to cover nine innings. We have to play another ten consecutive games before a reset. As a result, there are going to be August type usage decisions happening in April.

Is Bob only coming up for one day before they bring up Criswell for tomorrow? Campbell seems to be going down, but as of now the beat writers are suggesting Devers and Romy won’t go on IL. could they not option Romy and then switch he and Dalbec in a couple days if he’s fine? In that scenario Romy would need to wait 10 days before being recalled, unless someone were to go on the IL, which means for Dalbec to be up, someone needs to be IL'd, too, so either Romy or Raffy is likely.

Oh Boy. Back to managing the pen by using options and call ups again. What's wrong with that, esp early in the season? That's what the 40 man is for. Cambell will need to stay down for 15 days, unless a pitcher gets injured. That creates a hole in the pen, in my opinion. If that is being done to bring up a fresh arm for tonight or a roster spot for Dalbec, then the decision is short sighted and will lead to multiple moves, non of which make the bull pen better. Before you know, we are picking up other teams DFA guys for the big league team while a perfectly good guy waits out his time to come back up in AAA. Granted, someone has to go down to make way for a starter ( apparently Criswell) to come up for Saturday and that very well could be Cambell, I just don't like sending guys down just to bring up a fresh arm for that night.

Yeah I'm still on board with Hamilton. Despite the boneheaded fielding mistakes I've thought he actually looks pretty athletic out there. He'll settle down, he had 12 errors last year between the majors and minors. He's got a chance to be a valuable bench piece on a more talented future roster. Anyone that we acquire will have the fans groaning either when they step to the plate or a ball is hit their way, or both. I respectfully disagree. Hamilton has had plenty of opportunities to show his worth at SS and hasn’t shown you much. If Cora wants to him fake it @ 2B, I’m fine with that. However, he and the FO need to stop lying to themselves and plug Ceddanne in there on a regular basis especially when Refsynder is back.

Bullpen availability guess
DOWN Wincowski (two days rest after 65 pitches) Campbell (zero days rest after 28 last night, 16 two nights ago)
AVOID Slaten (zero days rest after 31 - could probably be pushed for one, but then unavailable games 2 and 3. Do you want to go back-to-back with your rule 5 guy after a two inning outing? With Winc, Whitlock, etc, Cora has previously referred to two innings - down 2, three innings - down 3)
AVOID? Jansen (zero days rest after 19 - available for one, but he went back-to-back, what, five times last year? Do you want his second time to be in mid April?) Rodriguez (zero days rest after 17, which was on one day rest after 14 - can give you an inning, but then that’s 3 of 4 and he’s down for game 2 and probably 3) Anderson (four days rest after 68 - the least unavailable of this group, but you’re overexposed if you don’t save him for tomorrow in case Criswell can’t give you length. Use him in game 1, you burn a lot of pitchers in game 2)
AVAILABLE Martin (one day rest after 27) Bernardino (one day rest after 29) Weissert (zero days rest after 6)
Edit: I think re: Kenley I was thinking of something else, like maybe asking him for four or more outs. It looks like he went back-to-back about ten times last year, depending on how you want to count two games in one day, or a stretch of three consecutive games. I’ll move him to available.

In a perfect world of bullpen load management it’s probably Houck 6 innings, the three available guys, and maybe like Joely/Anderson if you really need somebody else. Houck has had plenty of run support the last two times out, but against Reid Detmers he might not be as lucky.

Well it's not that easy to just get a "great-defense SS." Like Brandon Crawford is +13 OAA since 2022 but also -8 UZR and -20 (!) DRS. And he's 37 and has a 77 wRC+ in that timespan. OAA also likes Ahmed but the other defensive stats are mixed, he's 34, and also has hit considerably worse than Story since 2022. And of course the Red Sox weren't gonna sign those guys anyway during the offseason since they figured they had a healthy Story. I mean... it's not that hard, either. I know they thought they had a healthy Story in the offseason, but guys like Ahmed and Crawford lasted well into the offseason and signed for peanuts because they simply aren't very valuable or sought-after, which means you could trade almost nothing to get someone like that. I know you don't want to trade "assets" from a mediocre team, but if the Sox collapse into a cloud of dust without a 65 wRC+ SS, is it not worth shuffling some prospect fodder around to do that? Heck, Jose Iglesias is in AAA right now. My main point is pushing back against the general vibe that Story is the glue that held everything together when he simply didn't provide anything (intangibles aside) that can't be pretty easily replaced/replicated. Losing what Story provided (not what people hoped he'd provide when he signed, which is very different) shouldn't be some crushing blow, and yet here we are with all evidence to the contrary.
A blow to that 90th-percentile outcome where the Red Sox sneak into the playoffs? Sure, because Story had some upside with the bat that these other guys we've mentioned don't have. But a wheels-come-off and defense-falls-apart-completely crushing blow? Like asm18 said, it just shouldn't have to be that way.
Oh man I forgot about Jose Iglesias. Heck yeah if we're going to go the great fielding little hit route I'd love to see him again. The batting stats don't even look bad, has he had injuries or fallen off the last couple years defensively? Seems a little weird he is accepting AAA deals and can't stick on a roster.

I dont want to sound like the sky is falling but woof this lineup doesn't inspire any confidence. I guess there probably isn't a lineup they could run out right now that doesn't include Devers that would help in that regard though.

I would just like to point out that the Red Sox are favored by the gamblers to win this, even against a good pitcher.

Couldn't we just have Resnyder getting his reps in with the big club. Would it be that much worse?

I’d rather have Wong in the 2 hole than Reyes at this point

I was reluctant on moving Rafaela to SS for about 3 seconds, when Story first got hurt, but Rafaela is the only true option for SS. The Red Sox do not want to Swihart (used as a verb for screwing up a young player with too many position changes) him, so have been leaving him in CF. The Red Sox have plenty of outfielders who can play CF, but no one who can play CF at a major league quality level.

That '21 DRS number is shocking, I thought he looked good with us the 2nd half that year. He brings great vibes and vet presence, plays average D, doesn't K, and shouldn't cost anything. I cannot keep watching Reyes/Hamilton pretend to play SS.

Think I am gonna watch some other stuff tonight to break it up. Though, Houck is worth the price of admission. Just checking a bit.
Feel like there is some bias in the assessment of the team / record. Yeah, they should have won at least 1 of those Oriole games. But they also probably should have lost one or 2 of the A's games, IIRC. They ducked out of there with a sweep.
Finer point, 162 games of baseball smoothes out these curves. Hoping for the best, but this is gonna be a tough road with this group. More than willing to let it play out and see where it goes.
