I'll be attending each of the Sunday games at Hadlock this year. Looking forward to getting a nice close-up look at some of these guys. Hopefully mother nature plays along.
Hoping I'll be able to provide some insight or context to box scores. Let me know what you'd like to hear about.

Pitching was the theme today, potentially aided by an umpire who seemed to annoy hitters on both teams. Bats as a whole seemed to struggle with fastballs up. Cold day that was bad for offense, but I liked Anthony's approach on the day.
Christopher Troye looked great in relief. Nick Yorke made a nice diving play at second to continue his strong defensive play from last year. Hartford stole 2nd twice and 3rd twice in the game. I put it mostly on the pitchers, but also not Teel's best throws.

Bastardo started with 3 good IP. Wikelman followed with 3 solid innings of his own. Hoppe missed glove side down too much, but Zeferjohn finished up strong.
No Teel today. Blaze took a hbp off the hand, but stayed in the game. Struggling so far thos year, I liked his solid line drive 1b the other way in his last AB.
Anthony had a real strong at bat working back from 0-2 to get a 1b of his own.
Overall offense was patient against a starter that had no idea where it was going and topped out at 89 for 2IP. Lots of walks in the game, not a great game to be a pitcher.

Yup. The next group of stars will come out of AA this year. Some with rotate up to AAA and might even get to the Bigs late in the season, depending on injuries and the team standings. Yesterday, the entire infield were not regulars, plus O'Neil in the OF. And they still won. I hope they get the injury bug defeated by next month and then we'll see what kind of team they have. Can't blame the starters this year. A pleasant surprise.

For all of the amazing talent on Portland's roster, it is a little wild that Matthew Lugo has been the teams best hitter. Small Sample Size and all, but he leads all AA players in OPS, and has been an extra base machine so far this season. The K rate is still high, but he has doubled his BB% this season. It appears he has filled out a lot the last couple of years, and he is still 22 years old (for a couple more weeks). He is a former high draft choice, that if I remember correctly was assumed to be more of a project as a non-stateside HS draftee, I don't think it would be surprising at all if he were a late bloomer. He has become an everyday starter for the Sea Dogs, after really being more of an afterthought in the Sox system (no longer in the top 60 here, although maybe that will change in the next rankings if he continues to hit like he has). I think it would be funny (and probably not too unrealistic) if he were the first guy to earn a promotion to Worcester from the Portland roster.

Since the Sea Dogs were in Hartford Sunday, I thought I might fill in for the sportshubby. I was looking forward to what the big 3 would do in the hitter friendly Yard Goats stadium, but only Mayer had a good series. Mayer did make a couple errors but he plays the position with a confidence that conveys he is a major league shortstop. Yorke, Blaze, and Lugo all swung the bats well.
I am not a scout and it was only one time through the rotation, but I came away impressed with Portland's starters. Olivarez, Dobbins, and Wikelman all reached 98 and Angel hit 96, all with good game results.
Olivarez had 10 swings and misses in his 74 pitches. All 6 strikeouts were swinging, 4 on pitches way out of the zone (bad hitter decisions or swords?) and one on a gifted check swing strike call. Hartford did not get a runner caught stealing in the series but Olivarez helped himself out in the second inning by picking off runners that he had walked leading off second base, one right after the other. He was also helped by two double plays. Only 41 strikes in 74 pitches but he was hard to hit.
Dobbins made it through 6 even after a long 29 pitch 5th inning. 13 swings and misses, 6 with the fastball. 6 of 7 k's were swinging. Should have only been one earned run but the ump missed a call at first that the Hartford fan behind admitted was a gift of a call.
I had Wikelman for 12 swings and misses with 8 of those on the fastball. His 8 k's were divided equally between swinging and looking. If I had seen him in his outing when he didn't make it out of the first I would have a different impression of him but he looked very good today.
I thought the best performance last week was by Angel who only needed 75 pitches to get through 6 innings. He had a 7 pitch inning in the first which included outs on three consecutive pitches, a 9 pitch 4th, and finished with a 6 pitch 6th. 10 swings and misses. 5 k's, 4 swinging.
I was impressed on how much they all mixed their pitches even though they all had good fastballs. I'm sorry I didn't get to see Penrod at his best. I'm also sorry Ian wasn't there to give you a better scouting report on them but this is by far the best group of starters I've seen pitch for Portland in Hartford. Ian said in a podcast that he believes the system pitching is somewhat underrated and I would tend to agree after last week.

So far this season we are mostly ready for some good baseball weather. Every game I have been to this season has been cold, wet, windy. Good enough to play, but not weather you want to play in.
Roman Anthony dh'd today. Every at bat looks under control, calm, focused. He is one of those guys that can go 0-4 but you still leave being impressed by the approach. I am not making a direct comparison, but I had a similar feeling back in the day from Hanley Ramirez.
Marcelo was very pull heavy today. First one was a liner to 1b for a double play, but then some weaker contact to the right side. Would love to see him stay back and go the other way and up the middle.
Teel looks like he is taking control behind the plate with the pitching staff. A noticable number of balls bouncing out of the glove today. Offensively, he seems uncomfortable at the plate. I had a group of kids up and down in front of me so I didn't get to really look at his setup and swing consistency. Some questionable swing choices were in there. Compared to last year in his brief stint, he just looks more uncomfortable.
As a whole, situational hitting has been lacking and a lot of chase up and out of the zone from our hitters this year. Matthew Lugo looks locked in right now, and a random shout-out to Mickey Gasper's moustache. He is becoming a fan favorite in Portland.
Game time right around 2 hours.

Hanley Ramirez was amazing with Sea Dogs. Hit the ball harder, had more range at SS, better arm and speed on the bases than anyone else.
