Jen McCaffrey did a story on Mayer for the Athletic today. This piece stood out to me. "A dedicated nutrition plan and weight-training program helped Mayer add 12 pounds of muscle, bringing him to about 200 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame with plenty of room to grow." Really good to hear that he is already starting to fill out As long as he still looks like Vinny Chase. Vinny Chase if he had bulked up for Aquaman

It's all good weight, until it isn't In this scenario, it's definitely good since he had never done any weight training before, and now the team has him on a program. 6'3 200lbs is hardly a physique to be concerned about

Adding muscle was a stated goal by player and team when he signed, so this was planned.
For whatever it's worth, some reporting on Mayer kind of contradicted Toboni's "he's never lifted a weight in his life" statement at the time he was drafted. I think it talked about how he skipped the showcase circuit during the pandemic to work out on his own, including lifting weights, but I don't quite recall that to say it with certainty, if someone who remembers can step in. I think it was probably a bit of an exaggeration meaning he'd never really done a true weight lifting regimen. But I do recall reading something that made me take the "never lifted weights" sentence out of his scouting report here.

This is how Jen put it today: A dedicated nutrition plan and weight-training program helped Mayer add 12 pounds of muscle, bringing him to about 200 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame with plenty of room to grow. Mayer had largely avoided lifting weights in high school, figuring his body would be better suited physically to add muscle either in college or the pros. Now that he’s arrived, one of the bigger focus areas this past year was adding muscle to ensure he can stay healthy for a full 140-game minor league season.

Even in the videos from this off-season he looks stronger already. Obviously a pro training regiment focus on achieving that is better than he just doing it by himself.

My memory of those interviews was that he talked about working out on his own during the pandemic, but never mentioned weights. You can do a lot with body-weight stuff, pushups and burpees and sit-ups and such. I could be wrong.

This is good news IMO as it helps in his dedication to the game and his career focus but for many lean athletes filling out during this time is normal. These are the years most grow from being boys into men. It is a big deal in contact sports as professionals to compete against men when still a teenager, pretty sure the NFL has some rules that are in place for this reason.

Normally I would conclude that anybody who amasses 132k for any reason is likely fairly intelligent. To spend that on this particular card I would say quite risky. I know, no guts, no glory.

I still feel like it is a parody account. It can’t be real… can it?

One of the coolest things about watching Mayer is seeing him make adjustments within games. The rate at which he learns is really impressive. In back to back games for Salem he's struggled at the beginning of outings to deal with high quality (for the level) breaking stuff, but you can see the gears turn and him improve within each game. Stuff like that is just a joy to see, even if he never becomes a big league regular or anything.

However if you do have 132k kicking around or a really nice collection of credit cards and the kid rakes you're making 10x off this deal when you sell. I like vintage personally I was at 12k for a 33 goudey Ruth before getting sniped with 2 minutes left

You need a certain amount of money to live. Spending the excess on Marcelo Mayer baseball cards seems perfectly sensible to me.

Not making a judgement call, just saying there can be a real disonnect between those who have and those who have less.

What the 12K or the 132 K? It does make a difference.

Not a complaint or criticism but it is funny that the thread for the highest rated prospect in the org is two pages long and the most hotly discussed sub-topic is about baseball cards.
It's sort of the found money vs always expecting this contrast between him and Yorke (and to a lesser degree Casas). It feels like there's just more to talk about with some guys even if they're fundamentally not the same quality of prospect.
